A Personal Reckoning

I Looked Great on the Surface.

Underneath, something was wrong. I had skin cancer and autoimmune disease — and I was a dermatologist. I thought I was doing everything right.

I was tracking the vanity metrics: how my skin looked, my weight, my energy levels on the surface. But I wasn't measuring the pillars underneath — the inflammatory markers, the oxidative stress reserves, the hormonal balance, the microbiome composition. The things that actually determine whether your body can defend itself.

Now I'm obsessed with tracking. Because you can look great on the surface while the foundation is crumbling. And once you can measure it, you can change it.

Medicine, functional medicine, and alternative medicine shouldn't be separate silos. They should all play together based on the science. Medicine should be about letting you live your best life — protected, measured, validated, and held accountable.

“I thought I was reversing my damage. I just couldn't see it. Now we can.”

Your Bacteria Are Part of Your UV Defense System

A landmark study published in the British Journal of Dermatology (August 2026) by Duan et al. at the University of Manchester showed something remarkable:

Graphical abstract showing skin microbiota response to UV radiation
Graphical abstract showing skin microbiota response to UV radiation
P = 0.0005

Fewer UV-damaged cells cleared (TUNEL+ apoptosis) when microbiota was removed

P = 0.012

Fewer immune cells (macrophages, neutrophils) recruited without microbiota

P = 0.020

More uncontrolled proliferation of damaged keratinocytes without microbiota

Translation: When your skin's healthy bacteria are present, they help your body clear UV-damaged cells through apoptosis (programmed cell death) and recruit immune cells to clean up. Without them, damaged cells proliferate instead of dying — a potential pathway to skin cancer.

Does Inflammation Cause Dysbiosis? Or Does Dysbiosis Cause Inflammation?

This is the question that changes everything. An inflamed environment supports bad bacteria. Bad bacteria produce more inflammation. It's a vicious cycle — and it doesn't matter which came first. What matters is breaking the cycle.

This is why chronic inflammation is the master hallmark of aging. It drives cellular senescence, mitochondrial dysfunction, genomic instability, and — critically — dysbiosis itself is one of the 12 hallmarks of aging (López-Otín et al., Cell 2023). You have to know which hallmarks are in disturbance for you so you can directly target them.

What You Can Do Right Now

Anti-inflammatory nutrition. Mediterranean diet, omega-3s, fermented foods, polyphenols

Regular exercise. Reduces IL-6 and TNF-α, improves microbial diversity

Stress reduction. Cortisol disrupts gut and skin microbiome composition

Avoid toxins. Cigarettes, excess alcohol, harsh skin cleansers, unnecessary antibiotics

Sleep optimization. Circadian rhythm directly regulates immune surveillance

Regular screening. Skin checks, bloodwork, microbiome testing — catch it early

I Was Tracking All the Wrong Things. Now We Track Everything.

The bloodwork your doctor orders? It's a start. But it's not enough. We now measure the markers most physicians don't — the ones that tell you what's actually happening at the cellular level.

What We Track That Your Doctor Doesn't

Skin microbiome composition (PurelyBiome DNA analysis)

Oxidative stress reserves (PAOT test)

Biological age (TruAge epigenetic clock)

Inflammatory markers (hs-CRP, IL-6, TNF-α)

Hormone panels (testosterone, estradiol, DHEA-S, cortisol)

UV damage mapping (VISIA analysis — spots, redness, porphyrins)

Nutrient status (vitamin D, zinc, omega-3 index, B12)

Beyond Vitamin C & Retinol

Skin Protection That Goes Deeper Than the Surface

Vitamin C and retinol are important. But they're just the beginning. We're now targeting the 12 hallmarks of aging directly through our GMA7 complex — a multi-pathway approach that doesn't just improve how skin looks, but how it functions at the molecular level.

Our Rejuvenat DNA Repair Serum includes DNA repair enzymes that address genomic instability directly. Paired with Protectif broad-spectrum protection, you're not just blocking UV — you're supporting the repair machinery that runs after exposure.

We're constantly testing and improving these formulations — sometimes not just visually, but molecularly. That's the whole point: to improve it even more.

Clinical Study · Now Enrolling

We're So Confident, We'll Give You Your Treatment Back

We're running an observational quality improvement study to prove what we believe: that by targeting the microbiome and the hallmarks of aging together, we can measurably reverse both your biome composition and the visible signs of aging.

The Guarantee

If we can't improve your microbiome score AND improve how your skin looks, feels, and measures on validated aging metrics —you win your treatment back.

Testing Costs Covered (2x). Two full microbiome + aging panels included — before and after. $300 USD value. Just mention this study when you reach out.

Personalized Protocol

Your protocol is individualized based on your baseline testing — microbiome composition, inflammatory markers, biological age, and skin analysis.

Measured Outcomes

We don't guess. We measure before and after with validated tools: PurelyBiome, VISIA, TruAge, inflammatory panels. Objective proof, not subjective opinion.

Qualification Requirements

This is not medical advice. To qualify for the study guarantee, participants must follow the exact protocol discussed upon full enrollment, be medically stable, and not have any major trips or significant stressful events during the study period. Qualification is determined during the enrollment consultation. Either way, mentioning this study covers your testing costs (2x panels, $300 value).

Microbiome & Aging: FAQ

Answers about the skin microbiome, aging, tracking, and our clinical study.

What is the skin microbiome and why does it matter for aging?

Your skin hosts trillions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that form a protective ecosystem. Research shows this microbiome directly influences how your skin responds to UV damage, inflammation, and aging. A healthy microbiome promotes clearance of damaged cells and recruits immune defenses. A disrupted microbiome (dysbiosis) allows damaged cells to proliferate — potentially increasing cancer risk and accelerating aging.

How do you test the skin microbiome?

We use DNA-based microbiome testing (PurelyBiome) that analyzes the bacterial composition on your skin. A simple swab provides your Balance Score, Microbiome Skin Age, Environment Health rating, and a breakdown of key microbes — showing which are at optimal, above optimal, or below optimal levels compared to healthy references.

What is the QI study and how do I qualify?

Our observational quality improvement study measures whether targeting the microbiome and hallmarks of aging together can measurably improve both biome composition and visible aging metrics. To qualify, you must be medically stable, follow the prescribed protocol, and not have major travel or stressful events during the study period. Mentioning the study covers your testing costs (2x panels, $300 value).

Can I participate virtually?

Yes. Our AI-guided virtual assessment can get you started with a personalized evaluation and protocol recommendation. Many patients begin virtually and then come in for treatments and testing.

What's the difference between your skincare and regular products?

Our Rejuvenat DNA Repair Serum targets 10 of the 12 hallmarks of aging through our GMA7 complex — including DNA repair enzymes that address genomic instability directly. Most retail skincare targets surface hydration or single pathways. We've validated ours against biological age markers, not just wrinkle depth.

Is dysbiosis really one of the hallmarks of aging?

Yes. In the landmark 2023 Cell paper by López-Otín et al., dysbiosis was added as one of the 12 hallmarks of aging alongside cellular senescence, chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and others. This means microbial imbalance is now recognized as a fundamental driver of the aging process — not just a consequence of it.
